The key thing here is to think about the cube.  If you make most plays, White will double and you may not even have a drop.  Making a "big play" however, could stop the double.  By coming out to the 18 (bar) point, now White is under real pressure to hit.  If white doesn't hit, black has a very good game, and actually, that's the only play that white can't even double.

I've had students look at this play and not even think about coming out.   As Kit Woolsey has stated in several books and articles, one reason people miss the right play is they don't even consider it.
