2010-06-15 Match Cube/Answer

It is not only NOT a double, if doubled, White should Beaver.

As you can see, Red is a 54 percent favorite, and you are not supposed to beaver unless you are a favorite...so has extremeGammon lost it's mind?

No.  The answer is, the percents shown are "cubeless" equities...they show what the percentage of wins and losses and gammons are if there were never a cube.  But holding the Cube, White not only gains an edge (by being able to redouble whenever he gets substantially ahead), but when you are holding the cube you can actually play the checkers differently, and that "differently" often leads to more wins and/or gammons.

Of course, in our actual chouette, Red did cube, White did not beaver, and Red won easily and almost won a gammon.
