2010-08-18 Match Cube/Answer

Comments by David Rockwell:

Though this is an unusual position, it did occur in a recent match.

Unusual positions can sometimes be solved with the help of reference positions.  Here is a well know reference position with two checkers closed out.  It is a relatively narrow redouble and drop.

Reference position

In the actual position, there is an extra checker on the bar.  In exchange for this, the six point is open, twelve checkers are already off and there is one checker left to bring around the board.  This doesn't appear to be enough to compensate for the third checker on the bar, so the choice is clear.
