4-3 Match Play‎ > ‎

4-3 Answer

The reason we call the 5 point the "golden point" is because it's worth gold.  It is very important to make your 5 point.  Funny, but it's equally important for your opponent to make his 5 point, so if you can make it, that's a very good thing.  It is tempting to hit here, but whether you hit one or two checkers you could easily get hit back, and even if you don't you probably don't end up with that good a position compared to having a beautiful anchor on your opponent's 5 point.

By the way, there is a situation where hitting two is the best play, and that's when you are at gammon-go (gammons have a very high value).
