This play is a very tough play unless you think about the "big picture."   Ask yourself, "How am I going to win this game?"

As Red, you want to keep your structure, maintain your excellent board and prime, and wage a hitting battle while you have the upper hand.  Once you decide not to throw your checkers into a big stack on your 3 point (giving you poor flexibility for future rolls), then it's simply a choice of how to play those checkers on the 16 point.
